While our RV was getting it's tune-up, we had a choice of a 5 hour - reclaim the Columbia Gorge and Mt. Hood...or a 3 hr Tillamook Cheese Factory. Well, we've never been in a cheese factory...so you've guessed our choice.
Being Official, or un-Official cheeseheads from Wisconsin...we DO like our cheese. This operation was incredible. From the milk to the curds to the blocks that are aged to the chunks that are cut into 2#, 1#, 1/2# blocks...and cut, weighed, packaged and boxed in an incredible precision. Tillamook cheese. (pronounced Tilla muk...the oregon people are very particular about the correct pronunciation). There are 53,800 milk cows in Tillamook County that support this Cheese factory. That's 200-500 cows per farm that need to be milked 2 times a day. Amazing.
The ship represents the original way they shipped cheese...via the Columbia river.
We also had an opportunity to see the Blue Heron Cheese outlet. They used to make all of their own Brie...but now have the basics completd by a company in California...and put on the finishing touches at Tillamook Blue Heron Cheese Factory.
As we headed back to Lafayette, we took the 101 to HWY 18...so that we could get a glimpse of what our treck would be to the 101 from Lafayette on Tuesday with the RV.
