Hannibal

August 20-22, 2010 Hannibal, Missouri

A few years ago, we took Gram to Hannibal. And we did the Mark Twain River boat ride on the Missouri River and the went through the museums downtown. Caught a good pic of the riverboat this time when it came in to dock between trips.
At the end of main street we see the "boys." Oh, the trouble they got into together. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. It's all in the books!!!!

This round, we opted for the trolley ride and caught up on the history of Hannibal - the stories of Mark Twain's life...his years as a riverboat captain...and the homes and businesses of the people who are depicted in the many volumes written by Samuel Clemens.

The Mighty Missouri as viewed from the Highest point in Hannibal.

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) It was said that Samuel Clemens helped Ulysses S Grant (who was broke and dying of cancer) write his highly successful memoirs in the 1880's, which helped keep his family out of dire poverty when he died.

NOTE: Did you know that "Mark Twain" is a riverboat measurement? A Mark is a fathom which equals 6 ft. (Depth of the water.) So Mark Twain is 12 feet. Now you know! :-)

  1. Why do you repeat false rumors that Mark Twain helped U.S. Grant write his memoirs? Twain or Samuel Clemens was the publisher (CHas. Webster & Co.) of the Memoirs. Grant wrote every word in the two volumes. Twain never even offered advise to Grant as he thought that Grant's writing was superb.
