The Black Hills of South Dakota

August, 9-10, 2010

We began our journey to Mt. Rushmore by taking the highway that went through the "needles" of South Dakota. Our first pics of the "Bridal Falls" and the byways started our picture adventure. Before the needles section, we encountered a REALLY SMALL TUNNEL. Glad that we were in the little Red car and not the RV. Air conditioners and side mirrors would definitely have been left behind on any such attempt.

And There they were!!! "The needles." We had forgotten how unique thes formations were. Hard to imagine how they formed.

There was, of course one more tunnel getting out of the "needles", and again, one more before we saw the faces we came to see.

They were visible from quite a distance away...as we navigated the switchbacks and pigtail bridges (once again glad that we had the little red car.)

When we came back to the parking lot from the observation area, we saw the most incredible site. Neither of us had ever seen a WHOLE rainbow...end to end...and on top of that, for a few minutes there was a double rainbow. Unbelievable!!!!

And again, our adventure turned out just a bit more interesting than we had anticipated.
