Erie Canal

We took a great tour on the Erie Canal...When we looked at the brochure, I saw that they were going to play music.  "Low bridge...everybody down...Low bridge for we're coming to a town" and I said to Ron...that's a 4th grade song.  (More on this)...our trip took us up the last two locks on the Erie canal.  As the guide said...when you get through the last lock, you better know where you're going...a turn to the left goes on with the river...a turn to the right, and you'll go over Niagra Falls.

We watched as the water rose to meet the other side.  And then the gates opened again, and we were on level with the upper level.

The water in any lock system works just as it did in the Panama Canal...water filling from the upper levels is lowering the upper levels to move into the lower area...Amazing, even on a small scale.
Beautiful scenery as we transversed between Lock 34 and 35 on the Erie Canal.

The schedule of fares was interesting.  A kayak going from down to up, or up to down...was FREE...but they usually had to wait for other traffic to be moving with them.       When we got back to port...the guide indicated that a large warehouse next to the pier had been converted to a MUSEUM for 4th graders...because that's the year they learned about the Erie Canal.  ( see paragraph  #1)     :-)
