Avenue of the Giants

Oct 29, 2010

As we headed south, we took the "old 101" - a road that is now called the Avenue of the Giants.
Lots of BIG...lots of TALL.

Most of the areas of this "lower section" of the redwood forest
are untouched...the Roosevelt Forest has had no logging...so everything there is pretty much as it as always been.

This forest contains some of the oldest trees in the United States. We're talking BC...not AD. Some trees were dated over 2000 years old...and still standing.

It's really difficult to fathom the "greatness" of these trees. Ya gotta be there!

The fallen tree "cut" is 8-10 feet from the root section...which is considerably bigger than the cut that Jean is standing in front of.

The "knobs" on the tree are called "burls"...and they only occur in 1 out 2000 trees. A burl is an undeveloped "branch bud" - which may, many years down the road become a branch if the main tree is compromised. We saw several "fallen trees" that had several branches going straight up in the air like a Candelabra - these new branches coming from burls along the trunk of the tree. Fascinating!
