First things first...We had to get our toes wet in Lake Superior. Neither of us had been anywhere near or on Lake Superior before.
Our first glimpse of the Lift Bridge in motion gave us a view of "rather small"...but boats that were "too tall" to go under the lift bridge. At one point boats were stopped to allow the bridge to lower for emergency vehicles trying to reach the island on the otherside of the bridge. The island was once a peninsula before the channel was dug for the harbor.
We had a treat, as we were present to see a 1000 ft Coal Barge come through the channel on it's way to Detroit.
We did the SUNSET cruise of the harbor...met some great folks from St Cloud, MN.
After visiting the Soudan Mines, Ely, MN (to catch a glimpse of all of the "Northwoods Outfitters", Two Harbors, MN (Really neat Lighthouse on the Lake Superior North Shore), we decided to move from Chisholm, MN to Superior, WI...and drive back to view Duluth and see our 2nd LIFT BRIDGE. Good thing we did move on Sunday...as the bridge which would have allowed easy crossing into Superior with the RV was closed on Monday the 26th for repairs.

We thought of all of OUR families, and other families who travel with young ones, when we saw the COOLEST mode of transportation. This pic shows BIG people...but they had 3-seaters for 6...some had a basket up front with seatbealts for the little ones. Too cool. I'm sure "Carry me" just disappeared from the vocabulary of the young tots as they explored the Canal area of Duluth.
The island which housed all of the docked boats had a mini bridge of it's own...Not a lift bridge but a small draw bridge...delaying the pedestrian traffic until the sail boats and fishing boats had a chance to get out into the harbor. If they were really tall boats, they had to do the Lift bridge also before getting out onto Lake Superior to sail or fish.
